New medications added to pharmacy prescribing
These add to the growing list of medical services pharmacists can now provide, following the State Government's permanent adoption of the program last year. 'We're expanding Chemist Care Now so pharmacists can treat more conditions – making it easier for Victorians to get the care they need without a visit to the GP,' she said. The Victorian Health Department added that over the coming years, 'additional common health conditions and wellbeing services will be introduced to the Community Pharmacist Program', bringing the total to 22 services pharmacists can offer. While the State Government says the program helps Victorians to avoid unnecessary trips to the doctor 'while freeing up GPs to see people with more complex conditions', the RACGP remains deeply opposed to it.

Hospital pharmacists' scope is expanding
'If I want more staff or more support, I need to talk in the language of the organisation and make sure we address issues that are organisational priorities.' This approach has enabled pharmacists at the Alfred to move beyond dispensary-based roles and embed themselves at key points along the patient journey. The role of pharmacists was to obtain the best possible medication history, make recommendations around the management of acute blood pressure and facilitate the early administration of thrombolysis. 'We needed to equip pharmacists with the knowledge, the expertise and the confidence to go there and be part of those stroke calls,' Ms Foley said. 'There are opportunities to have a chat with the physio or the speech pathologist, to ask the dietitian why they've recommended a particular type of enteral nutrition, and to be with the doctor on the ward round.

Top healthcare provider trends in 2026
But that doesn't mean it's a passive one." Margins improve, giving leaders a short runway to act Fitch expects 2026 to look much like 2025 for most hospitals, with modest margin improvement and fewer sudden shocks to the bottom line. It has to be immediately accretive, or there has to be a very clear plan to get there." For struggling systems, that reality limits the pool of potential partners. It forces organizations to be more deliberate about how they use them." AI adoption becomes more selective AI continues to dominate healthcare discussions, but the tone has shifted from experimentation to return on investment. "Nobody wants to move first and regret it." The HHS recently asked the healthcare industry how it could speed AI adoption by using its powers to improve patient and caregiver experiences and outcomes, reduce provider burden, improve quality of care and lower healthcare costs."
